How to Build a Drone Frame with a CNC Machine


Drones, just like CNC machines, are something that many hobbyists like to customize, experiment with, and even build from scratch themselves.

If you want to build your own DIY drone, you need to start with the frame, and what better way to precision manufacture a drone frame than with a CNC machine?

In this guide, I’ll explain the benefits of making a carbon fiber drone frame using a CNC machine and how you can do it yourself. 

Advantages of Making a CNC Carbon Fiber Drone Frame 

Drones are pretty expensive, particularly the high-quality ones.

Sure, you can pick up cheap drones from Amazon for just $100, but these are generally pretty flimsy and cheaply made.

For a decent drone, you’re often going to need to spend upwards of $400.

So, if you make your own drone frame using a CNC machine, you can potentially save on cash and know you’re getting a reliable, well-made product.

Carbon fiber is the recommended material for making drone frames due to it being very strong yet light, and it can be sourced pretty cheaply online.

You can make the various drone frame components using flat carbon fiber sheets, so you don’t need to worry about 3D carving a model from a block of carbon fiber, which would be more expensive and complex.

Aside from the cost factor, making your own drone frame is a really fun and challenging project for both CNC and drone enthusiasts.

It’s a lot more intricate and unique than standard projects like small furniture or home crafts, and it means you can design your drone frame exactly how you like and control each step in the process.

This can be especially useful if you want to make a really light frame to make a fast, agile racing drone.

Choosing a CNC Machine & Software 

The first step is to make sure you have a CNC machine that’s capable of machining the parts you need to make a drone.

This is important because you’re going to be working with carbon fiber to make the drone frame, which is a very strong material. So, due to the high strength of carbon fiber, you’re going to need a high-quality CNC mill.

Some CNC routers can be used to machine metals and carbon fiber, so you could potentially use one, but it’s going to be a pretty slow process and you may struggle to achieve optimal results.

For cutting and drilling a very strong material like carbon fiber, a mill is best. 

You’re also going to need to make sure you have a large enough working area for the size of the drone you want to make.

CNC mills are typically more expensive than routers, but there are some really decent hobbyist mills you can pick up for affordable prices, like the Carbide Nomad 3.

There are even people who have made drone frames using their own homemade CNC machines, so that’s another option.

You’re also going to need a good quality CNC software for creating your designs, converting them to g code, and then sending the code to your CNC machine.

There are various programs out there that could handle this type of project, but Fusion 360 is a favorite of people who’ve CNC machined carbon fiber drone frames.

Making the Frame

As we’ve already mentioned, carbon fiber is the best material to use for the frame of your drone.

This is because it’s light enough to allow the drone to fly without being weighed down while being strong enough to support the other components and be crash-resistant.

There are various types of carbon fiber available online. Some recommend Lumeneir carbon fiber, while others suggest it’s best to try out some different types from different vendors and use cheap boards to practice cutting.

So once you have your CNC machine, software, and workpiece, you’re ready to get started.

You’ll first need to create your designs using your CAD software – make sure you do your research, as the design will need to match the purpose of the drone – racing drones, freestyle drones, and camera drones are all designed differently.

For example, racing drones need to be small and aerodynamic to make tight maneuvers at speed, while camera drones need to be heavier so they’re able to steadily hover in the air in windy conditions to capture good quality footage, so your design needs to be very precise.

When you’re happy with your design, you then need to export it to a DXF or DWG file, which is used to send 2D designs to your CNC machine.

You can easily do this using Fusion 360. You can also use Fusion 360 to convert the file into g code, which you’ll then need to send to a CNC control software.

There are both free and paid options available, but Mach3 is widely regarded as the best CNC control program.

Once you have your g code ready and sent to the machine, begin the cutting process by screwing or clamping the carbon fiber sheet to your CNC machine work bed.

I recommend using a water bed for the milling process to prevent harmful particles from escaping and being breathed in.

Once you’re finished with the frame, you can then start adding the components, such as the motor and propellers. You can buy all these separately from Amazon and various other sites.
